A convicted sex offender was badly burned when he was attacked in the Young Offenders' Centre at Hydebank, outside Belfast, last weekend. A teapot of boiling water was poured over the 20-year-old man who is serving a 15-year sentence for rape. He suffered burns to 20 per cent of his body and is being treated in hospital.

At Belfast Magistrates' Court yesterday Mr Martin Joseph Doherty (19), of Fodnamona Court, west Belfast, was charged with assault, causing grievous bodily harm.
