Gardai are investigating allegations of sexual assault on a male patient in a Co Clare hospital, the region's health board has confirmed. The allegations concern two male members of, staff at St Joseph's Hospital for the elderly in Ennis. The chief executive of the Midwestern Health Board, Mr Denis Doherty, confirmed yesterday the complaints had been referred to gardai.

Mr Doherty said the two staff members "had been put off duty immediately the complaints against them had been received".
