Madrid - Two members of the Guardia Civil and five civilians were injured in a car-bomb attack in the Basque city of San Sebastian last night, writes Paddy Woodworth from Madrid. ETA, the Basque separatist group, was almost certainly responsible. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
The attack has raised tensions just six days before Spain's general elections, and 14 days after ETA killed a Socialist leader in the Basque capital, Vitoria. ETA "suspended" its 14-month-old ceasefire last November, and killed an army colonel with a car-bomb in Madrid in January. Last night's attack took place close to the Guardia Civil headquarters in Intxuaurrondo, a barracks with a symbolic and controversial reputation in the 30-year Basque conflict.
The Basque regional government, made up of moderate Basque nationalists, last night condemned the attack "absolutely", and called on ETA's political wing, Euskal Herritarrok, to persuade ETA to end its new campaign.
