After the decision to order the extradition, Det Supt John O'Driscoll of the Garda National Immigration Bureau said the trafficking investigation being overseen by the Dutch was a very significant one being conducted throughout Europe, with arrests taking place as far away as the US and Nigeria.
He said human trafficking had an international dimension and gardaí had a responsibility to play their part in tackling it.
It was very significant that gardaí had arrested one of the main targets of the operation, he said.
Det Supt O'Driscoll said the investigation related to allegations that young people were being taken from African countries - Nigeria in particular - and brought to Europe where they were put into asylum accommodation.
They would then be taken out of that accommodation and put into forced prostitution and abused in other ways, he said.
The indications were that 100-200 girls and/or women had been brought into Europe in this manner, he added.
There was no suggestion at the moment that any of the girls had been brought into Ireland, but gardaí were keeping a close eye on the situation and are working with the Dutch investigators.
