A 30-year-old man is in hospital following a serious assault in the Co Leitrim town of Carrick on Shannon early this morning.
Gardaí said the assault happened at 3.30am in the Townparks area of the town.
The injured man was found with serious injuries to his head and was removed by ambulance to Sligo General Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
The area has been sealed off for a technical examination.
Gardaí have issued an appeal to the public calling on any witnesses to the assault or anyone that may have been in the area between midnight and 3.30am to contact them.
