Belgrade - A bitter Serbian father broke and trampled on his soldier son's posthumously awarded decoration outside a military headquarters in the southern Serbian town of Nis yesterday, Belgrade media reported.

The medal of honour, awarded posthumously to Aleksandar Vukovic (20), who was killed in Kosovo during last year's NATO air strikes, has caused a family row over whether it should be accepted or not. The Vukovic family sued the state and the army, blaming them for his death and demanding 50 million dinars (around $1.2 million at the black market rate).

Aleksandar's grandfather, Mr Radomir Vukovic, on Wednesday accepted the medal awarded to his grandson posthumously by President Slobodan Milosevic. But his father, Dusan, had already rejected it in December.
