The President of the Irish Medical Council, Dr John Hillery has admitted that the current system of self-regulation for doctors is not working.

He said the existing structures are "archaic, dysfunctional and legally confrontational".

Last week the Council launched an inquiry in to three consultants, who cleared disgraced obstetrician Dr Michael Neary of wrong-doing for removing the wombs of dozens of women in Our Lady`s hospital, Drogheda.

The Government is currently working on legislation to create a new system for the regulation of doctors.
