Lagos - A gang of armed youths holding 165 oil workers hostage on two drilling rigs in southeast Nigeria yesterday failed to release them as previously agreed, officials said.

The 35 youths, who are demanding jobs, seized the rigs owned by the Houston-based company, Mallard Bay, on Monday, taking hostage 145 Nigerians, seven Americans, five Britons and eight other expatriates.
