GARDAÍ IN Granard, Co Longford, have begun exhuming an unmarked grave following a report that it contains previously unidentified human remains.

The exhumation at Kilmahon Cemetery in Drumlish began yesterday morning after a report from a member of the public that a body had been buried there in an unmarked grave. Gardaí would not say whose remains were believed to be interred at the site.

Parish priest Fr Michael Bannon said he had been assured that no other graves would be disturbed during the work.

Longford gardaí are being assisted by officers from the Garda Technical Bureau in Dublin. The operation is scheduled to last three days.
