The search for the body of David White (18) in Dublin's Grand Canal has been called off at the end of the third day.

Mr White and his friend, Shane Coughlan, (18) disappeared early on Sunday morning.

Mr Coughlan's body was recovered from the canal at Clondalkin, near Fonthill Road bridge, on Wednesday afternoon by a team of Garda divers.

A postmortem confirmed he died from drowning.

Gardaí began searching for the men between the ninth and 11th lock when a shoe, similar to that worn by one of the missing men, was discovered near the canal.

The search was extended today along the canal and the canal bank up to the 12th lock. It will resume again tomorrow.

The pair had been last seen leaving a friend's house in Clondalkin at about 4.30am on Sunday.
