LONDON - The Church of Scientology is making a push for respectability with its first formal application to the Charity Commission and its first television advertising campaign in Britain.

The campaign, launched yesterday in London, is costing the Church of Scientology International £70,000 and is aimed at recruiting members. It follows a lifting in April of the ban by the Independent Television Commission on the Scientologists' television advertising since 1993 following complaints.
