Two leading scientific journals have strongly condemned the British government over its handling of the BSE crisis.
The harshest criticism came from New Scientist which accused ministers of trying to ignore expert advice which did not suit them. Nature, Britain's most prestigious science journal, called the affair a "scandal" and questioned the government's attempts to shift responsibility for advising the public on to scientists.
