Washington - Pagers were silenced across the US late on Tuesday after a satellite failure caused an unprecedented interruption in service to millions of beepers.

Up to 90 per cent of pagers in the US were affected, according to industry officials, after the Galaxy IV satellite, operated by Panamsat, ceased to communicate with paging stations throughout the US.
