Aston Villa failed in their attempt to put real pressure on Liverpool and Newcastle for the coveted fourth Champion's League spot as they were held to a one all draw against Southampton at St. Mary's.

Juan Pablo Angel set David O'Leary's side on their way with a penalty but the lead was canceled out by Kevin Phillips.

Leicester City put relegation behind them to secure a 3-1 win over Portsmouth at the Walker Stadium.

An own goal from Matthew Taylor gave the homeside the lead before Paul Dickov doubled the advantage on 66 minutes.  Nigel Quashie pulled one back for Pompey before James Scowcroft sealed the points.

Leeds United fans paid a fond farewell to Alan Smith as the England striker scored their third from the spot in a three all draw against Charlton.

Matt Holland gave Charlton the lead after 11 minutes before goals from Matthew Kilgallon, Jermaine Pennant and Smith gave Leeds what looked like three points.  However a Jason Euell brace, one from the spot, shared the points.

A Yourri Djorkaeff double gave Bolton a 2-1 win over Everton.  Duncan Ferguson scored for the Merseysiders.

Jermaine Defoe's 18th minute strike gave Tottenham a much needed win over Blackburn, while Szilard Nemeth and Massimo Maccarone scored for Middlesbrough, canceling out Paulo Wanchope's strike for Manchester City.
