Two sailors have been rescued after their yacht ran aground off the coast of Waterford.

The 26-foot yacht was sailing close to the coast at Duncannon when the tide went out and left it stranded.

An Irish Coastguard helicopter was sent from Waterford, when the crew sent a mayday signal at 1.35 p.m.

The two sailors were rescued eight minutes later by the Fethard lifeboat, which also had been alerted.

"It's a regular occurrence for small yachts to run aground if they misjudge the tide," a Coastguard spokesman said. "There was no damage to the vessel and no pollution."

The crew, who were brought to the harbour at Duncannon village, will be returned to the yacht tonight when the tide comes in.
