A chief suspect in the kidnapping of a five-year-old British boy in Pakistan has been killed in a shootout after two men tried to free him from custody, police said today.

Sahil Saeed, from Oldham, was taken from his grandparents’ house in the city of Jhelum on March 4th, by a gang of heavily armed men.

He was released unharmed on March 16th after a ransom of £110,000 was paid.

Police official Tariq Abbas today said that a suspect called Safeer, who was also known as Safeera, and who played a major part in the kidnapping, had been shot dead.

The suspect was killed during a shootout with police when two men tried to free him from a police van taking him to court in Gujarat city.

Mr Abbas said the two men attempting to free him were also killed.
