The Health and Safety Authority is conducting a preliminary inquiry to see if council roadworks in Rathmore, Co Kerry, were connected to a crash in which a man died.

Don Murphy (22), Knockaloman, Rathmore, died when his car went out of control at the entrance to the roadworks between 10.30pm-10.50pm on Saturday. He was alone in the vehicle.

Gardaí have ordered traffic lights be installed at the roadworks on the main N71 Rathmore to Killarney Road where traffic- calming measures are being built by Kerry County Council.

A spokesman for the council yesterday said it had complied with all warning and other necessary regulations for roadworks.

A HSE spokesman said the inquiry was preliminary to see if a full investigation was needed.
