A lawyer said further investigations were made in the case of Mr Joseph Laurence Reid (45), known as Brother Alphonsus. Mr Reid and a second man, Mr Joseph Scally also known as Brother Florence made a 90 second appearance at Newtownards Magistrate's Court, Co Down.

The men, with addresses at the headquarters of the De In Salle order at Castletown, Portlaoise, face charges of sex attacks on young boys. The offences are alleged to have been committed at the De La Salle Boys Home at Rubane outside Kircubbin, Co Down, in the 1970s.

Mr Scally faces seven charges including buggery and indecent assault. Mr Reid faces five charges including buggery, gross indecency and indecent assault. They were remanded on bail until October 29th.
