RUC traffic patrols are to be stepped up in the west of Northern Ireland following a dramatic increase in road accidents and fatalities. A police inspector has warned that the death toll is set to rise even higher unless driving standards improve. Insp Peter Reeve said that the 16 deaths so far this year in the RUC's L Division was double the number for the corresponding period in 1996.
