The RTÉ radio production Mighty Machas won the best documentary prize at the Prix Europa awards in Berlin, reports Derek Scally.

The documentary, by Michael O’Kane and Liam O’Brien, tells the story of Limerick master upholsterer and world-champion powerlifter Ger Mac Namara.

Mr O'Brien, RTÉ's Documentary on Oneproducer, said the win was a vindication of the national broadcaster's investment in documentary-making. "Over the past five or six years, documentary-making has improved hugely," he said.

The documentary was one of eight RTÉ productions nominated for this year’s Prix Europa awards, founded under the patronage of the Council of Europe in 1987.

The awards ceremony in Berlin on Saturday was attended by well over 1,000 delegates from more than 40 countries.
