London - Cardinal Basil Hume's successor as senior Roman Catholic cleric in England and Wales said yesterday he would like to see an end to the law which bars the heir to the throne from marrying a Catholic.

Speaking five days after his appointment as Archbishop of Westminster, the Right Rev Cormac Murphy-O'Connor said that he wanted to continue Cardinal Hume's work of bringing Catholicism closer to the centre of national life. His comments come after calls from Cardinal Thomas Winning, head of the Catholic Church in Scotland, for the amendment of the 1701 Act of Settlement.
