Former president Mary McAleese and her husband Martin are to be awarded the freedom of Roscommon.

Members of Roscommon County Council voted to extend the honour to the couple in recognition of their “outstanding work”.

The mayor of Roscommon Eugene Murphy, who proposed the honour, said they had changed the way the presidency operated.

The couple have a home in the county, close to the birthplace of Mrs McAleese’s father Paddy Leneghan, who was brought up in Croghan.
