Five Romanian refugees were being detained at Waterford Garda station last night after they were found hiding in the back of an articulated lorry.
The men in their 20s and 30s, had concealed themselves in the truck from Cherbourg to Rosslare. The driver was travelling to Inistioge, Co Kilkenny, when he saw two men jumping off. Two more men then jumped out.
The driver stopped and found another man hiding in the back of the lorry. The gardai apprehended two of the refugees nearby. The other two were found later at Main Street, Graiguenamanagh.
