Participation in educationally based youth groups develops skills which are sometimes ignored by academic teaching models practised in schools, the professor of education at University College Cork, Dr Aine Hyland, has told a Foroige conference in Co Clare.

Prof Hyland said this educational model of youth work, rather than the strictly social model, allowed young people to develop a wide range of skills.
