A thief who robbed a bookies shop in the small town of Ballybay, Co Monaghan, was tracked down by local children who followed a trail of banknotes he left behind.

The man entered Tully’s bookmakers on Main Street at about 8pm on Monday and demanded money. He escaped with a sum believed to €700, on the way dropping notes which some local children gathered up.

They took the cash to the Garda station and pointed out where the perpetrator had gone. The man will appear at Dublin District Court today.
