The Progressive Democrats spokeswoman on the environment, Ms Mairin Quill, has called for a thorough overhaul of driving schools and the driving test as part of an effort to cut road deaths. Ms Quill said the "gruesome" figure of 455 deaths on the roads in 1996 looked likely to be exceeded this year. She said a survey in the Irish Medical Journal showed nearly half of all drivers did not wear a seat belt.
