Five million contraband cigarettes seized by Revenue officers from a warehouse in Cavan yesterday had an estimated value of €1.5 million.

Despite the size of the haul nobody was arrested, though several people were interviewed.

The "MP" brand cigarettes arrived in Dublin on Monday aboard a container that originally came from Paraguay.

They were then transported to Cootehill in Cavan where they were stored in a warehouse until customs officers seized them yesterday.

The operation was conducted in co-operation with Belgian and Dutch authorities, and Olaf, the European Commission Anti-Fraud Office.
