The Bray refuse dispute is over. Tags costing £1.50p each will be available to householders from local shops. These can be attached to bags left out for collection by the UDC.

Private collection firms have been charging a similar rate during the month-long dispute.

Agreement on a self-financing scheme was reached between Bray Urban District Council and SIPTU after intensive negotiations last week. Union members accepted it in a secret ballot on Friday night.

The SIPTU regional secretary, Mr Jack O'Connor, said afterwards that the agreement provided for a self-financing scheme based on one truck. It will operate initially for six weeks under monitoring by an independent assessor.

The council has pledged to market the scheme aggressively.
