Freetown - The UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi Annan, was "shocked" by the discovery of dead bodies, apparently those of Nigerian and Zambian peacekeepers, in Sierra Leone, his spokesman said yesterday.

The United Nations announced earlier that several dead bodies in UN uniforms - six to eight, according to witnesses - had been found about 80 km northeast of Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital.

An independent photographer who saw the bodies said they were dressed in Zambian and Nigerian uniforms.
