The first Viking ships that sailed up the Liffey in the 9th century were feared, but today a replica Viking ship's progress up the river will receive a celebratory greeting by representatives from the Naval Service, the Danish embassy and local vessels.

The Sea Stallion from Glendalough is expected to arrive into Dublin Port at about 1.30pm after her 42-day voyage from Roskilde in Denmark.

Naval Service ship LE Róisín will accompany the Sea Stallion to the quayside, where the crew will be welcomed by Minister of State for Community Affairs Noel Ahern, Danish minister of culture Brian Mikkelsen and Lord Mayor of Dublin, councillor Paddy Burke.

A Viking village has been established beside George's Dock and will be open for visitors today and tomorrow. It will be populated with Viking characters and a re-enactment of a Viking battle will take place on the quayside.

Because of bridge height restrictions, the Sea Stallion will be hoisted on to dry land late on Thursday to begin its journey to the National Museum.
