Dakar - Some 30 rebels, five civilians and three soldiers were killed in Senegal's Casamance region during an army operation over the last three days. The manoeuvre appeared to be an attempt to head off armed separatist activity in Casamance before yesterday's legislative elections.
Yesterday rebels killed two soldiers and wounded three others in an ambush as they were transporting results in Casamance, officials said.
