Colombo - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger guerrillas yesterday said they lost 76 of their fighters while resisting a major military advance into territory held by them and discounted government claims.

The rebels said in a statement that only 76 of their fighters died in five days since Tuesday in the north of the country. The government has said its troops killed at least 360 Tamil guerrillas and lost 77 security personnel in major clashes near rebel-held Puliyankulam.
