FREETOWN - Sierra Leone rebel leader Mr Foday Sankoh yesterday ordered his forces to back the leaders of a weekend coup as Nigeria kept up pressure for restoration of the civilian President.

Freetown's new military leader, Major Johnny Paul Koromah, tried to reassure Sierra Leoneans at his first news conference that Nigerian ships which landed hundreds of troops on Tuesday had come to evacuate their nationals, not to intervene. But a senior military source said Major Koromah's Armed Forces Revolutionary Council was under strong pressure to stand aside.
