An RAF pilot ejected safely moments before his plane crashed just north of Oxford, the British Ministry of Defence confirmed today.

The Harrier jump jet came down at approximately 5pm near to Kidlington, a few miles from the major RAF base Brize Norton.

Emergency services were at the scene and a large plume of thick black smoke could be seen for miles around.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said an investigation into what happened was under way and no further details could be given.
