Racing at Newcastle today was given the go ahead after a 7.30 a.m. inspection.

Recent heavy rain had put the meeting in doubt but after checking the track, clerk of the course James Armstrong said: "Racing goes ahead.

"It stopped raining last night at about nine o'clock. We had five millimetres after we looked last night so it's going to be pretty testing in the home straight.

"The going is heavy, soft in places."
