Joan Burton and Jan O'Sullivan are vying to succeed Wicklow TD Liz McManus who is stepping down from the position.

The first of a series of five meetings takes place in Dublin tonight and others will follow in coming days in Mullingar, Cork, Kilkenny and Galway.

New leader Eamon Gilmore will also address tonight's event - his first official party engagement since his unopposed election last week.

Up to 4,000 party members are entitled to vote by postal ballot in the deputy leadership election.
