The Students' Union at Queen's University Belfast held a referendum yesterday on the re-erection of bilingual signs in the building. The signs had been taken down in the summer following advice from the Fair Employment Commission. A group, Students for Cultural Equality, collected 1,000 signatures to force a referendum on the issue.

Another group, Campaign for Cultural Equality, also called for a `yes' vote to "shake off the misrepresentative and apparent sectarian shibboleths from the Irish language and culture". But Queen's Unionist Association called for a boycott of the referendum.
