London - The Queen Mother was last night recovering in hospital after a successful hip replacement operation. Surgeons decided to operate when she fractured her left hip in a bad fall at Sandringham Stud while she was viewing horses. In 1995 her right hip was replaced.

No visitors were expected for the first 24 hours after the emergency operation which was carried out late on Sunday night at London's King Edward VII Hospital, where flowers and getwell messages arrived throughout yesterday.
