A group of schoolchildren who were rescued after getting into difficulties in the Mourne Mountains last night have been discharged from hospital.

The supervised group of 34 teenagers from St Olivers Community College in Drogheda, Co Louth, were brought to safety by members of the Mourne Mountain Rescue team with the help of officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Sixteen members of the group were taken to hospital for examination. Four were suffering from hypothermia. All were discharged last night.

Inspector Sam Cordner from Newry Police Station praised the Co Down rescue team's efforts in rescuing the group.
