PSNI officers attacked by crowd in Derry

A policeman was injured after officers were attacked by a crowd of almost 30 people in Derry, it was confirmed today.

A policeman was injured after officers were attacked by a crowd of almost 30 people in Derry, it was confirmed today.

Two police cars were also damaged after officers were attacked shortly after midnight while patrolling Moss Park in Shantallow.

The crowd attacked the officers, jumping on to and kicking the police cars.

A PSNI spokesman said: "A number of those involved also attempted to pull the officers from their vehicles."

One police officer sustained injuries to his hand during the attack. Police used CS spray in an attempt to control the crowd.

The spokesman said: "Two males were arrested for public disorder offences however one escaped from police custody and ran off wearing handcuffs on his wrists."

A 20-year-old man is due to appear at Derry Magistrates Court on March 23rd charged with disorderly behaviour, assault on police and resisting arrest in relation to the incident.

Officers appealed to anyone with information on the attacks to contact them at Strand Road station.
