Police in the North believed they have foiled a major jewellery robbery in the Belfast area.

Two men were arrested yesterday evening after a jeweller was taken hostage. He was released unharmed.

The alert was raised from a house in the Greater Belfast area at around 5pm yesterday, according to the PSNI. After a police operation that lasted an hour and a half, and included the police helicopter, the two men were arrested as they attempted to escape in a vehicle.

"The businessman was released from the vehicle and a substantial quantity of goods and a firearm recovered," a PSNI spokesman said.

Police are today examining the house and a business in the Belfast area.
