Police have appealed for witnesses to the speedboat incident that fatally injured a six-year-old boy off a Co Down beach on Monday to come forward and assist them with their inquiries.

Stuart Wilson, Rathfriland, Co Down, was on a wakeboard being towed by another boat when he was struck by the speedboat off Cranfield beach. He was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry but then transferred to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children where he subsequently died from his injuries on Thursday. His family were with him when he died. A vigil was held for the boy and his family in Rathfriland on Thursday at which Rev David Sommerville described Stuart as “bouncy, vivacious and a great footballer”. His funeral takes place in Rathfriland today.
