A senior garda in Co Donegal has appealed to anybody who has used the services of prostitutes in the area to seek medical advice urgently.

Supt Vincent O’Brien made his appeal after it was revealed that a man charged with being involved in prostitution in Letterkenny is HIV-positive.

The man appeared at Glenties District Court on Wednesday, where he was ordered to keep the peace. During evidence it was revealed that the man and a woman from Spain had been operating a brothel in the town.

Supt O’Brien confirmed that a transsexual prostitute in Letterkenny who is HIV-positive had been referred to the Health Service Executive.

It is estimated that at least eight brothels are operating in Letterkenny. Supt O’Brien said people operating and visiting brothels would face the full rigour of the law.
