The annual cost of operating the prison system per head of prisoner population in 1995 was £44,600, the Minister for Justice, Mrs Owen, said in a written reply.
In another written reply, the Minister said 40 murders dating from 1990 to the present were being investigated by the Garda. Detections were made in 20 of the 34 murders recorded during 1996.
