A Cork primary school is to be honoured this week by the Spanish ambassador when he will present it with an award for its teaching of Spanish to more than 250 pupils.

Scoil Barra Naofa Cailíní in Beaumont in Cork city has been named Colegio Español del Ano, or Spanish School of the Year, among Irish primary schools by the Spanish embassy.

And on Wednesday, principal Margaret McCarthy and vice-principal Mary Sexton will travel to Dublin to receive the award from the Spanish ambassador to Ireland, Javier Garrigues.

Accompanying them will be Spanish teacher Elvia Browne, who has developed the school’s cultural diversity programme as part of the modern languages in primary schools initiative.

A native of Argentina, Ms Browne teaches Spanish to all the children in the school.
