A spokeswoman for Diageo said that the cost increase would apply from March 5 thand was likely to result in the cost of a pint increasing by four cents.

However, the increase paid by the customer is likely to increase by roughly 8 cents as publicans usually impose a similar price increase.

A VFI spokesperson said t he likelihood is that "members will have no alternative but to pass the price increase on to the customer. The VFI doesn't know by how much as this is up to individual publicans."

According to the Central Statistics Office the average price of a pint of Guinness was €3.72 at the end of 2006.

Diageo supplies Guinness, Smithwicks, Carlsberg, Budweiser and Harp. The company will also increase the price of Smirnoff Vodka and Baileys. The cost of Gordon's Gin and Bushmill's whiskey is not being increased.
