A powerful earthquake hit the Lake Tanganyika area of central Africa and was felt as far away as the Kenyan coast today.

A powerful earthquake hit the Lake Tanganyika area of central Africa and was felt as far away as the Kenyan coast today.

The United States Geological Survey said its 6.8 measurement was preliminary and located the epicentre in the area of Lake Tanganyika, between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania.

Workers in buildings in central Nairobi left their offices in a panic. The quake was also felt in Mombasa, on the coast.
