A postmortem examination on the body of a baby girl who died after being admitted to hospital with suspected head injuries has concluded.

The seven-week-old was taken to Sligo General Hospital by her parents on Saturday morning.

She died yesterday and was pronounced dead by hospital staff at 1.40pm.

A Garda spokesman said the postmortem at Sligo General Hospital finished at 6pm and further tests will be carried out by the Office of the State Pathologist over the next number of days and weeks.

Earlier today the baby girl's family home in the town's Cranmore estate was sealed off for a technical examination.

The spokesman said the investigation is ongoing and there are no further updates.
