A post mortem is expected to be carried out later today following the death of a prisoner at the Midlands Prison in Co Laois last night.
A garda spokesman said the inmate (28) was found dead in his cell shortly after 1am yesterday morning.
The man's name has not yet been released.
The cause of death is unknown and separate investigations have been launched by the Prison Service and gardaí.
