Lisbon - Portuguese Prime Minister Mr Antonio Guterres yesterday reshuffled his 11-month-old Socialist government, firing his unpopular interior minister Mr Fernando Gomes and naming a new economy minister.

Mr Mario Cristina de Sousa, currently head of state-controlled utility Electricidade de Portugal, was given the economy portfolio with basic responsibility for industrial policy.

Mr Joaquim Pina Moura, who previously combined both the finance and the economy jobs, remained in the key post of Finance Minister, a government statement said.
